Bucs Stars Vying for Top Accolades

The 2025 PSL Awards nominees were announced on Tuesday morning with several Orlando Pirates players up for top accolades following an eventful 2024/25 season.

The Buccaneers dominated the list of nominees for this year’s prestigious awards, with forward Relebohile Mofokeng leading the way. The 20-year-old got the nod in five categories, including the coveted Players’ Player of the Season and Footballer of the Season awards.

He is also nominated for the MTN8 Last Man Standing prize after his heroics in helping the club to yet another successful campaign. Pirates clinched a third successive MTN8 title during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign, where Mofokeng was among the standout players. He will contest the award alongside Bucs teammate Deon Hotto with Stellenbosch defender Fawaaz Basadien rounding up the trio of nominees.

The Bucs star also features in another cup category which is completely dominated by players who starred for the Soweto Giants in the recently-concluded campaign. DDC graduates Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Mohau Nkota are nominated alongside him for the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament accolade, both recognised for their outstanding displays in what was the debut season in top-level football for each player.

There is heavy representation in the league categories with Sipho Chaine, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Makhehleni Makhaula each getting a nod for the Goalkeeper, Defender, and Midfielder of the Season awards respectively.

An identical set of nominees appears in the two show-stopping categories – Players’ Player of the Season and Footballer of the Season – with Mofokeng set to contest both awards against Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Sekhukhune United’s Keletso Makgalwa.

Also getting the nod for outstanding work in the dugout throughout the season is ex-Bucs mentor Jose Riveiro, who is up against Stellenbosch’s Steve Barker and Miguel Cardoso of Sundowns.

The winners for each category will be announced in the days leading up to the start of the 2025/26 season.
