July 2015

Summer is here.  So very hot.  Our members are busy working hard.  Some are traveling to exotic and exciting places.  Others are working in various new careers after retirement.  Some are even enjoying just being retired!  Each and every retiree is living life in their own unique way and we’d love to hear all about it!

The news from for Orlando Police Headquarters is so exciting with marathons, fundraisers and community events.

We are so pleased to have Chief John Mina give us a special message:

Retired Crime Fighters:

Being a police officer these days is tougher than ever, but I wanted you to know that the members of the Orlando Police Department have shown great resolve through everything that has happened both locally and nationally in the past year.  Our officers don’t have the luxury of watching a video of an incident over and over again before they take action.  They must make split second decisions that most people cannot fathom.  I am extremely proud to lead such great people and a great police agency.

Many times the great police work that happens here is overshadowed by a few mistakes or incidents that are not clearly reported.  But I know about the great investigations and arrests, the selfless acts, the bravery, the courage, the kindness and compassion that our officers show every day that will never show up in the media, and our residents rarely hear about.

We are all saddened by the sudden loss of Officer Derek Briscoe who was taken from us way too early.  Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Crime is down in the City of Orlando and continues to decrease because of the hard work of our sworn officers and dedicated civilians.  Do not be discouraged by some negativity shown towards our Department by a few people.  This community overwhelmingly supports the Orlando Police Department.   Our residents are very appreciative of our current officers who risk their lives to keep this community safe as well as the sacrifices made by all of you throughout the years.
